May 20, 2020: Message for U.S. Citizens: Contracting COVID-19 in Kuwait

May 20, 2020

We hope you are staying safe and healthy during this challenging time.  Earlier this week, we sent a message to the American community about the importance of seeking immediate medical attention in case of an emergency.  If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms such as coughing or difficulty breathing, call the Ministry of Health at 151 or 2497-0967.

Given COVID-19 concerns worldwide, we wanted to explain what to expect in the event a U.S. citizen contracts the virus in Kuwait.  If you are admitted to a hospital with COVID-19, the Kuwaiti government will not inform the U.S. Embassy unless you are incapacitated.  If you are admitted to a hospital with COVID-19 and would like the U.S. Embassy to know, please contact us by phone (2259-1001) or by email (KuwaitACS@state.gov).  Please note that no visitors of any kind are permitted.  You will not be released from the hospital until the Ministry of Health has determined that you have recovered, which has been two consecutive negative tests for COVID-19.  Only then will you be discharged into home quarantine.

The U.S. Embassy stands ready to assist U.S. citizens.  As a reminder, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to COVID-19 by maintaining social distancing and wearing a protective face mask where social distancing of six feet or more is difficult to maintain.
